Meet Mel!

A hands-on designer with more than 18 years’ experience in the creative industries.

My story begins when I was in high school, when I started my senior years I only had 1 goal and it was to become a pilot. I was fascinated by flight and everything that came with it, I had an intense desire to prove myself, test myself and push myself to great heights. I chose all the subjects I needed to get into the airforce, I gave it everything I had.. but I bombed, I was so far out of my academic league it wasn’t funny… actually thinking back now it was a little funny…  what was I thinking?!

Well, when they talk about silver linings, they’re not kidding – this was how I discovered the world of creative arts! but, what I realised was that regardless of the industry or environment I was aiming high and I wanted to sore. I needed to create something, something new, something that everyone would know of and it would have to be something that would empower people with new or enhanced skills.

My journey took many turns, exploring media, animation, graphic arts. I struggled with a social phobia which led me down some challenging roads. But I never stopped exploring new avenues and new possibilities, and I began looking at life from a holistic perspective.

It was during my journey through animation that I realised the value of good quality reference. I learnt that using references is essential to creating believable art. And there is so much to learn from what we see around us. Artists have been working this way, analysing anatomical reference for centuries.

It became my mission to find a way for animators to search video references and access instantly. This would mean a library of amazing video references, a space that animators could come to explore the human body in motion, and build a community based around research and understanding the mechanics of the human body in motion.  I had no idea that this would change my life, in ways that I could have never imagined!

I brought Endless Reference to life. Since i began filming references in 2009 I have managed to catch the attention of some of the highest profile animation experts from Disney, Sony and Autodesk, i have helped hundreds of aspiring animation students gain knowledge and control over the physical principles and cause-effect relationships that determine the outcome of human performance such as motion, resistance and momentum.

Ps.. incase you’re wondering, I never gave up on flying, last year I made it to the sky in my first acrobatic flying lesson, proof that dreams can come true.

I give you ENDLESS REFERENCE!

Each month, approximately 214 hours of Endless Reference footage is being watched around the globe, and that’s just what we know of! with our highest engagement and largest audience in Japan followed closely by the United States and the UK.

When Mel isn’t busy educating people on the bio mechanical differences between a jog and a sprint she can be found tucked away in a South Sydney studio working on her freelance design business.
